Confessions of a Fitness Professional – Boot Camp Blues

Ok guys, so here’s the thing!

We’re seeing “Boot-Camp Fitness” popping up at most fitness establishments these days. I admit, they can be very effective, and is a great way to challenge your body and fitness stamina. But! “Boot-Camp Fitness” must be done in a safe environment with spotters available to ensure that execution and form are correct.

That being said: Some years ago “during my pre-fitness professional days”, I attended a “Boot-Camp”, and to my surprise, “It was exceptional!” Now, I am 100% sold on the “Boot-Camp” experience, and am extremely diligent in my efforts to provide the same stellar service in the DWF Boot Camp. “Boot-Camps” offers something for everyone at all levels of fitness, and provide motivation to remain faithiful to a meal plan by breeding results.

Fitness 101

Its funny because most people assume everyone knows the basics of exercise. Even seasoned exercisers may have misconceptions about exactly what some fitness terms means. Let me start with this, according to new research published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism it is recommend that we completely 150 minutes of physical activity per week. This combination should also include strength training 2-3 days per week. So moving on, here are some definitions of words and phrases you’ve heard or will hear along your journey:

Picture this:

In my soft voice, “Alright everyone, great job today.” “Let’s move into our cool down.” (Sitting on the floor) “Lift your arms, inhale up and exhale down and again.” (The room is quiet as soft Latin jazz plays in the background). Everyone is feeling relaxed and reinvigorated from their workout. “Ok open your legs wide, inhale up, arms above your head and slowly exhale as you stretch to the ceiling, and slowly exhale, bending over your waist.”

Taking Your Personal Training Serious

I have often been asked what are the benefits of getting a personal trainer or do I need a personal trainer. I personally think everyone, including myself can benefit from personal training sessions. For the novice exercise enthusiast I suggest utilizing your personal trainer as your teacher. Learning proper form, exercise performance, modifications and creativity for your personal fitness level and growth. As a seasoned professional, I utilize my trainer for motivation and accountability. Challenge your trainer with workouts that suit YOUR liking. If it’s something you like, chances are you will continue. Whatever your fitness level or goal please consider the following prior to committing to a personal trainer:

Confessions of a Fitness Professional – Cheese Please

Today – NO, this whole week has been nothing but one challenge after the next! I’m already thinking “OMG is it Friday yet?” Well, it turned out to be one of the most “off” days of the week so far.

Here’s a rundown…

I woke up late, missed my Dawn at Dawn (I know – TRAGIC right?), and yes I do them daily – FOR REAL! I missed my turn on the way to class – causing me to be late, I forgot two – yes TWO of my Aqua Zumba class routines, I caught a flat tire after class; which caused me to miss my personal afternoon workout, the cat ate my homework, and I broke a finger nail!

Now if that wasn’t enough, for the past few weeks I’ve been craving Sonic Fried Cheese Sticks ,right?

Last month, I wrote about an amusing encounter with cheese sticks. I wanted the world to understand that even as fitness professionals, temptations still exist – AND – at times we give in to them. But for me, it’s ironic that I would share one of my food experiences because, in all actualities, food has not been a friend to me at all.

For over 20 years I suffered with an eating disorder called B.E.D. (Binge Eating Disorder).

What is Eating Clean?

I know you have all heard the term “eating clean” and secretly wondered exactly hat does that mean, “I wash my food before I prepare or eat it anyway.” Haha While that is part of it that’s not exactly what eating clean means.
